A PRACTICAL SOLUTION FOR FULL SUPPLY CHAIN MONITORING OF HIDES AND SKINS ORIGINATED FROM THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON, SUPPORTED BY THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION
CONCERIA ITALIA AND CONCERIA POLETTO ARE THE FIRST ICEC TRACEABILITY CERTIFIED COMPANIES
ICEC and NWF (National Wildlife Federation, America's largest and most trusted conservation organization), have partnered to develop a complete supply chain assessment of leathers and hides originated from the Brazilian Amazon, based on the procurement profile of two Italian tanneries: Conceria Italia and Conceria Poletto. By using a combination of the most advanced traceability tools available, with support of NWF, ICEC CERTIFICATION can now provide enhanced supply chain visibility and more effective deforestation monitoring for its companies.
The first two ICEC TS 412 traceability certificates have been issued alongside the adoption of public sourcing policies that include specific requirements related to deforestation and conversion of natural habitats for hides and skins originated from Brazil.
These policies containing criteria for Deforestation and Conversion Free Leather from Brazil are constructed as broad statements contextualizing specific sourcing requirements, with specific commitments to eliminating deforestation in companies’ bovine leather supply chains, where cattle ranching is a leading driver of forest loss.
Through ICEC certification process the Brazilian leather suppliers of Conceria Italia and Conceria Poletto must adhere to the policies and demonstrate evidences of good practices necessary to mitigate hides and skins from being originated in areas that have been deforested or converted.
The current ICEC traceability guidelines (TS410/412), allows for certified tanneries to have assurances and enhanced visibility of their supply chains up to the birth farms. This process encourages Brazilian suppliers to incorporate complete monitoring solutions and traceability tools into their processes, helping Brazilian cattle stakeholders to advance in this important agenda.
